Stages of the English Way to Santiago
The English Way, a historic and less-travelled route than the popular French Way, begins in the coastal city of Ferrol, in northern Galicia. This journey, which stretches for approximately 110 kilometres, is a gem for pilgrims seeking a more intimate and peaceful experience.
Seven-day itinerary
Starting in Ferrol, a city with a rich naval and cultural heritage, the English Way offers a unique blend of coastal and rural landscapes. As walkers progress, they encounter the natural beauty of the Galician rías, lush forests and picturesque villages, each with its own history and charm.

This route, ideal for those interested in a deep cultural immersion, allows you to explore Galicia’s rich history and its connection with northern Europe. Pilgrims can enjoy local hospitality, exquisite Galician cuisine, and the opportunity to discover churches and historic monuments along the way.
A city with a strong maritime character, closely linked to naval activity. Its modern streets and wide gastronomic offering leave no one indifferent.
This first stage is somewhat long but flat. It runs mainly through urban areas and parallel to the estuary. There are no big climbs or difficult stretches. From Neda onwards we continue through urban areas along the estuary without much difficulty. Only after leaving Fene behind will we find the first slopes.
Today’s walk is mainly through rural areas. The most difficult point is the climb from Ponte de Lambre to Montecelo. We arrive in Betanzos, a beautiful medieval town famous for its tortilla.
This is the most difficult and demanding stage of this Camino. We leave the towns and estuaries behind to walk several kilometres surrounded by nature. Among forests and scrubland, we cross country lanes and hamlets until we reach Mesón do Vento. There are hardly any shops, restaurants or taxis on this stage.
Compared with the previous day, today’s route is relatively easy and flat. The area consists of paved roads and dirt tracks, some of them of medieval origin.
Final stage. Today we reach our destination: the long-awaited cathedral. The number of pilgrims increases significantly the closer we get to our destination. The gradients on this stage are flat. We enter Santiago through an industrial area, but the magic returns as soon as we step into the old town, until we finally catch sight of the cathedral towers.
The journey ends in Santiago, leaving pilgrims with unforgettable memories and the promise of a future “Buen Camino!”
