The section of the Camino de Santiago stretching from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela is one of the most iconic routes for pilgrims seeking to obtain the Compostela. This stretch, covering just over one hundred kilometers, is the minimum required for walkers to receive this recognition, making Sarria a preferred starting point for many.

The itinerary from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela is an integral part of the French Way and is, currently, the most traveled. Pilgrims can choose between two variants to complete this section of the Camino de Santiago from Sarria. The first option consists of a seven-day route, including a full stage from Palas de Rei to Arzúa. Alternatively, this stage can be divided, adding an extra night and a stop in Melide. This 115-kilometer path from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela represents one of the most visited routes by pilgrims on their spiritual journey.
The adventure begins in Sarria, a medieval enclave and hub for pilgrims, located just over 100 km from Santiago, the minimum distance required to earn the coveted Compostela. This place buzzes with the energy of walkers preparing for their journey. Here, pilgrims can enjoy a well-deserved rest, adapt to the surroundings and get ready for the experience that awaits them.
The first stage, of low difficulty, is a delight for the senses, with scenery that reveals the essence of Galicia: chestnut and oak forests, winding rivers and green meadows. The path passes through picturesque villages such as Barbadelo and Ferreiros, ending in Portomarín, a town reborn after being submerged under the waters of the Belesar reservoir, with the River Miño witnessing your arrival.
We continue with a low-difficulty stage, climbing up to the Serra de Ligonde. The route is dotted with traditional stone crosses (cruceiros) and passes through villages steeped in history, such as Castromaior and Ventas de Narón, offering a mix of natural landscapes and paved stretches.
This day takes us into the province of A Coruña, setting out from Palas de Rei and crossing eucalyptus forests and medieval bridges. We pass through charming villages such as Furelos and Boente, and a stop in Melide is recommended to savour the traditional pulpo a feira (Galician-style octopus) before reaching Arzúa, famous for its exquisite cheese.
A short and peaceful stage, perfect for reflecting on the experiences of the Camino and preparing for the arrival in Santiago.
Excitement builds on this final stage. Setting off at dawn is recommended in order to arrive in time for the pilgrim’s mass. From Lavacolla, walkers reach Monte do Gozo, where the Cathedral of Santiago can be seen for the first time, heralding the end of the journey in Praza do Obradoiro.
The journey ends, but the spirit of the Camino lives on. “Buen Camino” echoes as a reminder of the experience lived and the path that still continues.
