The Eucharistic Celebration for Pilgrims is a solemn tribute offered at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, dedicated to those who have completed their journey along the Camino de Santiago.
With changing schedules throughout the day, it was customary in the past to announce a list of pilgrims who had recently arrived in Santiago, stating their places of origin and the routes taken to reach this historic city.
One of the most moving and spectacular moments of the Celebration is the use of the Botafumeiro, a large censer that swings majestically through the cathedral’s transept, an act reserved for specific festivities or upon express request.
The Pilgrim’s Mass represents a moment for introspection and gratitude for walkers, as well as an opportunity to share their joy and triumphs with other travelers from various parts of the world. It constitutes an event full of emotion and meaning, resonating strongly with both the faithful and those who do not profess the faith.

This imposing censer, one of the largest in existence, is a distinctive symbol of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Its name derives from the Galician term “botar fume,” which translates to “emitting smoke.”
Since its origin in the Middle Ages, the Botafumeiro has served as a symbol of purification for the crowds of pilgrims who gathered at the cathedral. Today, it continues to be an essential element of the religious ceremony, famous for its spectacular oscillation through the cathedral’s transept.
Standing one and a half meters tall and weighing 53 kilograms, the Botafumeiro is operated by a team of eight tiraboleiros. They propel it with great skill, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 68 kilometers per hour and an angle of 82 degrees from the vertical, tracing a 65-meter arc across the transept.
Documented in the 12th-century Codex Calixtinus, this ritual has been a pillar of the cathedral for over eight centuries. Despite being a safe spectacle with very few incidents throughout its history, the Botafumeiro has left an indelible mark on the memory of those who have witnessed its impressive journey.
The cathedral houses two Botafumeiros: the original, forged in 1851 by the goldsmith José Losada, is made of silver-plated brass. The second, a silver duplicate of the first, was donated in 1971 by the Alféreces Provisionales. Both pieces are carefully kept in the cathedral’s Chapter Library, ready to amaze the faithful and visitors with their aerial dance during liturgical celebrations.
